Private Prison Construction

Colorado prison officials say construction will soon begin on a 500-bed private prison in a Pueblo industrial park.

The facility for parole violators and inmates nearing parole
should be open in two years.

The Pueblo City Council recently approved locating the prison in
the Pueblo Memorial Airport industrial park despite residents'
objections.

The facility will be run by Wackenhut Correctional Corporation
of Palm Beach, Florida.

State Corrections Department head Joe Ortiz says costs at a
private prison are 50 dollars a day per inmate, compared with 77
dollars a day for state-run prisons.
