U.S. military officials say insurgents got to a crashed Air Force jet in Iraq before they could and the pilot is missing.

The F-16 jet crashed about 20 miles northwest of Baghdad Monday while supporting ground troops in Anbar province.

The Air Combat Command says insurgents went to the site immediately after the crash and that by the time U.S. soldiers reached the area, the pilot was gone.

Videotape pictures obtained by Associated Press Television News appear to show the wreckage of the jet in a field and the remains of a U.S. serviceman with a tangled parachute nearby. Al-Jazeera satellite television says images of the dead pilot are too graphic to air.

No word on what caused the crash but a U.S. military spokesman says he doubts it was shot down.
