El Paso County is reporting its first human death from the West Nile virus. County officials say a 71-year-old man died last night after suffering from West Nile encephalitis. He had been in the hospital for about a month.

Rosemary Bakes-Martin is director the El Paso County Department of Health and Environment. She says the county now has 86 human West Nile cases. She says the county is relatively fortunate that it hasn't had more cases and is encouraging residents to continue protecting themselves from mosquitoes.

The state health department has announced 29 deaths from West Nile as of Monday. Colorado leads the nation in human infections of West Nile virus.
