This season's ski competition has begun -- the competition to be the first resort to open. The Loveland ski area is usually the first or second in the state to open. But Arapahoe Basin -- the last to close many years-- is battling to be the first to open this year.

A-Basin's altitude of more than 13-thousand feet helps it stay open until the Fourth of July many years. The ski area hopes to open by mid-October this year. A dusting of snow in the mountains has whetted skiers' appetites.

Loveland has a target opening date of October 16th. Keystone and Breckenridge backed off the race to open in October last year -- deciding to save snowmaking money and water and open later with a better snowpack.
