Pay Raise Debate

By: Associated Press
Updated: Mon 5:50 PM, Sep 15, 2003

The city of Pueblo and Pueblo firefighters continue to disagree on the issue of pay raises. The firefighters' union wants a four percent raise next year and a change that would shrink the number of salary steps for most firefighters from five to three.

Compressing the salary levels would give many senior firefighters raises from nine to 16 percent with the average at about six percent. City officials say Pueblo doesn't have the money and have proposed foregoing pay raises next year. An arbitrator will issue a decision by October 19th.
