Rising plywood costs may drive up the price of new homes. Plywood prices have jumped more than 27 percent nationwide this summer and are up more than 61 percent from a year ago.

Strong demand, lower production and bad weather have combined to boost the cost. Meanwhile, home construction has climbed to record highs nationwide because of low mortgage rates. Some homebuilders have seen price increases of 20 to 30 percent in the last 60 days.
