Fort Carson is planting high-moisture shrubs in an experiment to protect the post from wildfires. About a half-acre of the post has been planted with a shrub called forage kochia that is resistant to burning.
Gary Belew, chief of the post's Natural and Cultural Resources Division, said he is waiting for the seeds to germinate. The shrub is one of several plants and grasses Belew plans to use to ``green strip'' the high-fire-risk interior of Fort Carson, where soldiers shoot live ammunition.
Green-stripping involves creating a roughly 330-yard-wide path
of plants that helps keep a fire from spreading. Belew hopes to know in a couple of years just how viable and helpful forage kochia may be to Fort Carson.
