Three more West Nile virus related deaths were reported in Colorado Monday. That brings the total number of deaths to 21.
Two of the deaths were in Jefferson County and one in Denver. Cindy Parmenter of the state health department said the dead in Jefferson County were an 89-year-old man who died of encephalitis
on Saturday and a 66-year-old man who died yesterday of meningitis. The Denver victim was a 77-year-old man who died from encephalitis on Sept. 4.
Parmenter said 56 new cases were reported, bringing the total to 1,214. In addition, West Nile has been confirmed in 662 birds, 485 horses and from 23 flocks of chicken. Health officials say the number of new cases has been declining as mosquitoes prepare for winter and switch from blood meals to plant nectar. Nevertheless, they expect new cases into next month, when freezing temperatures will bring an end to the epidemic.
