$1 Million Accounting Error

Elbert County is temporarily about $1 million richer thanks to a mistake by the state. The highway aid payments of $970,000 were supposed to go to El Paso County, which is next in alphabetical order.

An outside agency that represents Colorado counties caught the mistake. El Paso County is facing a $6 million budget shortfall next year. County officials say the mistake went unnoticed because state payments vary widely and don't come in at the same time each month.

Elbert County officials are negotiating with the state to determine how they'll pay back the extra money they received.
