The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says at least seven people have fallen victim to a roofing scam taking advantage of Colorado residents.

This is how it works: The company, Claim Specialists Incorporated (CSI) goes to a homeowner's house to inspect it for any damage. They ask the homeowner to sign a release allowing them on the roof. Once they find damage, they inform the homeowner their homeowner's insurance will cover the repairs.

The insurance company ultimately sends a check to the homeowner for the work. The homeowner signs the check over the CSI for the work... and the work is never completed.

The company has conducted similar scams statewide with possibly 400 people getting scammed so far. Don't let yourself fall victim.

Here's how you can avoid being scammed:

-Always check with the Better Business Bureau.
-Make sure you have a written estimate.
-Don't not sign a document without reading the terms of the contract.
-Don't pay for services until the work has been completed.
-If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Yep, I have been there. Last September they came to our door. They swore it was all legal. They called the insurance company and it was under way...so we thought. Our adjustor came out and said there wasnt enough damage done for them to replace the whole roof and because of our deductible, they wouldnt be able to cut us a check. CSI told us they would not make us pay them and they would waive all the charges because of the hassel. We kept having a contractor call us trying to get us to take the roof to court. Finally my husband got nasty and said he would take legal action if they didnt leave us alone. In September when we check the BBB they had an A rating. In October they had an F rating with a waring to contact the Attorney General if you had problems with them. For once I am happy our deductible on our house is so high!!!
