Hundreds of people in need were treated to a hot turkey dinner on Wednesday at the City Auditorium. It was the Colorado Springs Rescue Mission 's 8th annual Great Thanksgiving Banquet.
They say they came to fill up on food and good cheer. "It’s fun to serve these people---to see their faces light up when you give them food," said the Mission’s Joseph Vazquez.
Some also find fresh hope for their faith. “I believe the Gospel is the answer to every problem they have," he said.
The guests also find warmth in the fact that so many people are willing to give them a hand during the holidays. “They've just been thankful that people actually care and reach out to help them," said Vazquez.
About 200 rescue missions across the country dished out the turkey, mashed potatoes and dressing one day early. They hope to serve a half a million people this year. "Not only are we helping less fortunate people that can’t get a meal on their own, we are helping folks on the street."
