Holiday Travel

An estimate 36 million Americans will travel the highways this holiday weekend. According to AAA, the majority will only venture about 50 miles from home.

But for the rest, they’re packing the airports and taking advantage of lower ticket prices than in the past few years. The day before the holiday is traditionally the busiest day of the year for airports across the country. But at Colorado Springs Airport, it’s not too bad! Everyone we spoke to seems pleased because travel is moving quickly and it’s convenient.

Usually the Colorado Springs Airport would see about 5,600 travelers per day. On Wednesday, they're expecting 8,000.

At Denver International Airport, much more volume, but just as few problems. Security lines topped out at a 15-minute wait Wednesday. That peak came at about 7:30 a.m., and passengers were treated to a mild, five-minute wait for most parts of the day.

Travelers throughout the holiday weekend are still being encouraged to get to the airport early, especially if they're driving there. Both economy lots at the airport are full, but space is still available in the more-expensive garages. Passengers checking luggage should also arrive early. Some airlines are requiring bags to be checked more than an hour before the flight time.

Airlines are projecting that more than 700,000 passengers will travel through DIA by Monday.
