Two People Dead, One Hurt In Head-On Crash

Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle head-on crash that killed two people and hurt another.
It happened on Highway 285, 10 miles north of Fairplay, Colorado.

Police say a 2008 Nissan Xterra, driven by 44-year-old Bud Bivens of Cruoken River, OR, was northbound on 285.
He reportedly crossed the double-yellow center line into the southbound lane, and collided head-on with a 2007 Nissan Xterra.
That vehicle was driven by 16-year-old Ms. Kjersti Anderson of Bailey, Colorado.

The 2008 Nissan reportedly spun as it ran off the right side of the roadway and came to rest on its wheels.
The 2007 Nissan also reportedly spun as it ran off the right side of the roadway and also came to rest on its wheels.
The airbags were deployed in both vehicles.

Emergency personnel declared both Mr. Bivens and Ms. Anderson dead at the scene. A passenger in the 2008 Nissan, identified as 47-year-old Ms. Betty J. Burwell of Salida, Colorado, sustained serious injuries and was taken from the scene to Swedish Medical Center in Denver.

Ms. Anderson and Ms. Burwell were both wearing seat belts but Mr. Bivens reportedly was not.

Pending toxicology results, alcohol/drug involvement is unknown.
This crash remains under investigation.
