You can now get a ticket for speeding in Colorado Springs in neighborhoods where there are no signs posted. Police began enforcing the new 25-mile per hour speed limit in residential neighborhoods Friday.
On the first day of ticketing police officers were handing out about one ticket every five minutes, 18 in the first hour. They say that's because most drivers aren't aware they're speeding when they're driving through neighborhoods. But, officers hope the new limit and increase police presence will assure people pay attention.
The new limits went into effect in response to thousands of resident complaints of people speeding through their neighborhoods.
Drivers who speed face fines of $10 per mile an hour over the limit.
Drive Smart Colorado Springs say 325 traffic accidents between 1995 and 2001 happened in residential areas. Between 1991 and 2002 there were 94 fatalities.
