A federal health agency is giving Colorado $500,000 to help fight the nation's worst outbreak of West Nile virus.
State health department director Doug Benevento said the money will be spent on high-priority mosquito abatement and public education projects after consulting with county health officials.
The money is coming from the Centers for Disease Control. Much of it likely will be spent in northern Colorado, where the majority of the state's human cases of West Nile have been reported. State health officials have reported 492 cases and seven deaths statewide this summer.
