A large aerial attack on West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes could be in the works in Colorado. State epidemiologist John Pape says he'd like to see as many as one million acres around Colorado treated with insecticide in two swoops several days apart.
As of Tuesday, Colorado has 450 confirmed cases of West Nile virus, more than any other state. And seven of the eleven US deaths from the virus this year have occurred in Colorado.
The state is asking for four-and-a-half million dollars from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help pay for aerial spraying. Some money would also go to county health departments across the state.
