Fire Revegetation Money

(Denver-AP) -- State and Shell Oil Company officials have announced a campaign to raise money to replant fire-ravaged Colorado forests and prevent erosion from the barren slopes.

Shell donated $25,000 to the effort and reported the creation of a Web site about the program. Greg Walcher who is director of the state Department of Natural Resources says his department worked with Shell on the site.

The Web site provides links to other sites and tells people how to donate to the campaign.

A 137,000 acre Hayman fire has burned slopes around Cheesman Reservoir, a major source of water for Denver, prompting fears of erosion when heavy rains hit the denuded hill sides.

Other fires are posing threats to other water sources too.
