El Paso County Deputy Coroner Dawn Miller says a Colorado Springs high school football player who collapsed and died during a Friday night game had a heart condition.
Miller said 17-year-old Fermin Vialpando died on the field. She said he had a heart condition but further testing would be required to determine the exact cause of death.
His mother, Sundae Vialpando, told The Denver Post today that her son had no known health problems.
She said, quote, "Doctors said sometimes with an athlete -- it puts a strain on their heart."
Players, coaches and students met at the school Saturday morning. The homecoming dance was canceled.
Vialpando was the center on the offensive line.
The game against Ridgeview Academy was halted when Vialpando collapsed.
