Flu Outbreak

The flu is being blamed for nearly 200 student absences at a Fort Collins junior high school.

Doctor Ken Gershman is head of the state's communicable disease
program. He says the influenza virus is already in the state and is
encouraging people to get flu shots.

Webber Junior High had 194 students miss school yesterday out of
a student body of 900.

Officials think the outbreak began around October 28th, when 60
students missed class.

Tests show students are suffering from Type-A flu. That type can
make people seriously ill for up to two weeks.

The flu kills about 36-thousand people each year in the U-S. The
elderly and people with chronic illnesses are most susceptible.
