Qwest Changes

Qwest is eliminating a feature known as wide-area calling in its 14-state region beginning Friday.

The change means land line customers will pay long-distance charges for certain calls that had been considered local.

Other wireless carriers have also phased out the service.

Qwest says the change is needed so companies can meet federal mandates for allowing customers to keep the same wireless phone number when changing carriers.

Land line calls to about 20,000 Qwest Wireless customers could be affected.

Charges will now apply in any region where a land line-to-land line call already incurs a long distance charge.
