Four Fort Carson soldiers died and 13 others were hurt when their helicopter was shot down in Iraq Sunday. Many of the victims were headed out of Iraq for rest and relaxation, or emergency leave. In all, 16 people were killed and another 21 injured in the attack.

Among those killed, Sergeant Ernest Bucklew of Fort Carson's Third Armored Cavalry Regiment. Family members say he was on his way home to attend his mother's funeral in Pennsylvania. He is from Enon Valley, PA.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Barbara Bucklew said her husband told them in e-mails, that he couldn't wait to get home.

Barbara Bucklew says she was getting something from her car Sunday when she saw the notification officers. She told one of her neighbors she hoped they weren't coming to her house, then saw them turn and head her way.

Bucklew says even on his worst day, the soldier knew how to make
people laugh.

KKTV featured SGT Bucklew as one of our Colorado Heroes in late August. At that time, Barbara Bucklew said that she and her two sons were anxious for him to come home safely, and both boys missed their Daddy dearly.

Fort Carson's Emergency Family Assistance Center has opened its doors to help relatives dealing with the deaths and injuries of loved ones. The assistance center includes social work services, a chaplain, and legal help.

The military calls Sunday the deadliest day for American troops in the six-month-old occupation of Iraq.

A total of 25 Fort Carson soldiers have died while serving in Iraq.

Another Fort Carson soldier who was killed in the attack, is SPC Darius T. Jennings, 22 of Cordova, South Carolina. He was assigned to 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. No other information is available at this time.

The families of the two other fallen soldiers have not yet been contacted, so their names have not been released.
