Wayne Patterson Dies

The former warden of prisons in Buena Vista and Canon City has died at the age of 87.

During his career, Wayne Patterson had to oversee executions,
even though he didn't believe in capital punishment. He also won
the respect of many prisoners with his firm belief that the majority of them could be rehabilitated if they were taught a skill and given the resouces to stay off drugs.

Patterson worked to improve prison conditions by starting music groups
and hiring counselors and chaplains. Colleagues say he liked to
walk the prison grounds unaccompanied by guards or guard dogs and
always preceded prisoners names with "Mister'' when addressing
