An accused kidnapper sits behind bars. Police arrested 20 year old Cory Demers Thursday afternoon. They say he's the one who stole a van outside the Walgreens on Academy and Carefree earlier this month. There were two kids inside the van.

Demers now faces a second degree kidnapping charge and a motor vehicle theft charge.

On September 3rd at Walgreens, police say Patience Kabwasa-Sewell told them she left her 2 young kids in the van, along with the keys, while she went shopping inside the store. When she came out, the van was gone and so were the kids.

Just minutes later, 3 year old Zion was found walking on the street near the drug store. But, it was until hours later, that the van was finally found, 7 month old Azeria was inside and okay. One woman spotted the van at a Wal-Mart in Fountain, about 10 miles away from the Walgreens.

When she spoke to 11 news that day, she said her gut instinct told her something was wrong. "It was starting to get hot and she was very sweaty. It was very hot; there was a blanket over her."

Just a few days after the frightning crime, police released surveillance video. It shows a possible suspect at the ATM machine in the Walgreens. Police believe it’s Cory Demers. He's now in custody.

If he's convicted, Demers could face up to 30 years in jail. Police say the mother of the children could face charges of child neglect. If you have any additional information about this, call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP.
