Escalator Accident Report

By: Associated Press
Updated: Thu 9:42 PM, Jul 31, 2003

Denver city inspectors say they're unsatisfied with a report pinpointing the cause of an escalator accident at Coors Field, and plan to conduct their own tests.

At the same time, inspectors are also taking a look at
escalators elsewhere in the city, including Cherry Creek Mall and
Invesco Field at Mile High.

City officials shut down escalators at the mall Thursday morning to
conduct an inspection. Escalators there are maintained by a
different company than those at Coors Field.

An escalator at the ballpark malfunctioned July Second, hurtling
screaming baseball fans into a pile at the bottom. At least three
dozen people were hurt.

Kone Incorporated issued a report yesterday blaming overloading and a misconnected wire for the accident.
