Mental health officials say as many as 1,700 mothers in El Paso County may have suffered postpartum
depression last year. The National Mental Health Association says postpartum psychosis effects one in one-thousand new mothers.

The symptoms include bouts of anger, confusion and violence toward themselves or their children. Clinical social worker Marianne Savarda says many women do not seek treatment because of the social stigma of being unhappy after giving birth.

Health officials suspect that Lamar resident Rebekah Amaya suffered from postpartum psychosis when she drown her two children in a bathtub this month. She says a spider crawling across her hand was a sign to kill her children.
