Prison Population Growing

The report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics shows the state's
prison population grew by nearly eight percent last year -- behind
Maine and Rhode Island.

Critics say the state and country can't afford to keep jailing
more and more people and should develop alternatives to prison.
Colorado's prison population is pushing 19-thousand -- more than
five times what it was 20 years ago.

The Legislature earlier this year approved spending a hundred
million dollars on a new prison for violent criminals.

The governor's staff says criminals must be locked up to protect
the public.
