In Costilla County, the Fort Garland Water & Sanitation District's phone message tells residents there is a boil order for parts of the area, due to potential well water contamination.

According to the message, residents living near the intersection of highway 160 & 159 were apparently hand-delivered a notice telling them to boil their water until further notice.

The district does say, the water is safe for bathing and washing dishes.

In response to a potential water well contamination discovered Thursday in Fort Garland, Colorado, Care and Share Food Bank will send 4,500 pounds (about 560 gallons) of water to the affected area Friday.
The water was donated by Colorado Springs Sam’s Club and Whole Foods stores, as well as the Target distribution center in Pueblo.

The potential contamination was noticed yesterday, when a local utilities company damaged a water line while digging up a sewer line. The well water in Fort Garland is currently being tested for contaminants, and no one has reported any illness due to water consumption.
Residents have been told not to drink tap water until the problem is solved.

Approximately 500 people live in Fort Garland, Colorado, which is located about 2 hours southwest of Colorado Springs.
