Court Appearance

Lamar police say a woman accused of drowning her two children in a bathtub confessed to them at a Colorado Springs hospital over the weekend. An affidavit released today says 32-year-old Rebekah Amaya admitted she held her infant son under the water until he stopped breathing, then did the same thing to her four-year-old daughter.

The affidavit was released hours before Amaya's first scheduled court appearance today. She was expected to be formally charged with first-degree murder in last week's deaths of four-year-old Grace Headlee and 5-month-old Gabriel Amaya.

Amaya has been on suicide watch in an 8-by-8-foot cell where she is monitored 24 hours a day. A deputy also enters the cell every 15 minutes to check on her.
