Many local military and law enforcement heroes were honored Thursday afternoon at the annual Medal of Valor ceremony.

The Colorado Springs Police Department presented medals of honor to six police officers who put their lives on the line in extremely dangerous situations. All branches of the military were also recognized.

One of the police officers honored had saved a woman who was abducted at gunpoint from a Target store in Colorado Springs last year. Two masked men kidnapped the woman as she was leaving the store. The men wanted money. They forced her into her own car and drove away.

This story could have had a terrible ending, except that a police officer stepped in at the right moment. "He did indeed come to my rescue. He was exactly at the right place at the right time. And he did exactly the right things." Elizabeth Metzler is talking about her rescuer, Sgt. Richard Reisler.

He saw a car run a red light and chased it. When the car finally came to a stop, the driver ran off. Sgt. Reisler drew his weapon and approached the vehicle. A second man also took off. Elizabeth was left behind.

"I don't what would have happened. They were threatening my life. I don't know what their intents were. To this day, I have no idea," she says.

" I don't know what would have happened, but when you're abducted by two guys with masks, and one guys name is "Chaos" and the other guys name is "Batman"---it's not a good day," says Sgt. Reisler.

For his efforts. the police department presented sgt. Reisler with the distinguished service award. "I think it's every police officer's dream to be at the right place at the right time. Intercede and interrupt a crime like this. I feel really good," he says.

The two kidnappers were captured, convicted and are now behind bars.

KKTV 11 News will televise the Medal of Valor ceremony on November 2nd at 4:30 p.m. and on Christmas Day at 12 p.m.
