Authorities say a Fort Carson soldier who drowned in the Euphrates River northwest of Baghdad has been identified as 19-year-old Private Benjamin L. Freeman of Valdosta, Georgia.

Freeman was assigned to K Troop, Third Squadron, Third Armored Cavalry Regiment based at Fort Carson.

Military officials say he had been reported missing about 20 minutes before he was found Monday floating near Haditha Dam.

Soldiers used a rope to lower a captain to the water and retrieve his body, but medics were unable to revive him.
