A U-S House Committee field hearing in Greeley will help lawmakers decide on if there's any problems with the Endangered Species Act.
The U-S House Committee on Resources meeting is on whether the Preble's meadow jumping mouse should continue to be protected under the act. The hearing was initiated by Colorado Republican Representative Marilyn Musgrave. Her spokesman, Aaron Johnson, says it's NOT clear if suggestions will be forwarded to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is considering taking the animal off the endangered list. Its decision could affect nearly 31,000 acres in Colorado and Wyoming designated as critical habitat.
A fierce dispute arose this year about whether the mouse is a distinct creature with a dwindling population or is a more common species.
