A FLASH FLOOD WATCH will go into effect this afternoon for most of Southern Colorado. Daytime heating and moisture will combine with a disturbance moving through Colorado to develop numerous thunderstorms. Any one of them will be more than capable of producing very heavy rain. Burn scars and areas that have seen recent heavy rain will be under the greatest risk for flash flooding. This FLASH FLOOD WATCH will remain in effect through 6pm Wednesday. The 11 Breaking Weather Team will be tracking this threat closely for you the next two days.
Struck by lightning on a Colorado Springs baseball field, doctors said it's a miracle he survived. Jason Wagner was recently released from the hospital and he’s speaking out for the first time.
Jason was coaching little league baseball at Fremont Park and they were just about to cancel the game because clouds were rolling in. "I must've got hit around this area," Jason points out near 3rd base. This is the first time he has been back to Fremont Park. The last time was on July 19th, when he was coaching his son's baseball team and that's the last thing he remembers. "What I've been told is that I hit face first...” He was dead for nearly 30 minutes.
Two months later, Jason is now learning how to walk again, even wearing the same tennis shoes from that day. He is also trying to regain his memory.
He show us that the lightning struck him at the base of his skull, and then traveled through his body, leaving a scar on his chest. The lightning left his body at his ankles, leaving marks behind.
Heat from a lightning bolt can be up to 50,000 degrees Farenheit, which is 4 times hotter than the surface of the sun. It’s a lesson Jason lived to tell about it. "If you hear thunder, even if it’s not close, take your kids off field. It’s not worth the chance."
Jason says every time he hears thunder, he runs. ”Everyone tells me, ‘you have a better chance at winning the lotto before getting stuck by lightning.’ I said, ‘you ain't lying. I wish I would've won the lotto instead.’"
If you can believe it, Jason is back on the field again and coaching football this fall.
If you want to help out Jason's medical bills, you can go to any US Bank. The account is under “Jason Wagner”.
