Most of us are looking for new ways to pick up some extra cash.

Consignment stores, thrift shops, whatever you want to call them, have been around for a long time, but now, they're busier than ever.

The owner of Chic Consign near Centennial and Garden of the Gods, says her 7-week old business is booming. “We have 8-10 people everyday that are new customers,” says Chom Suk, part-owner of the store.

Lots of their clothes, purses and shoes are brand new; some are used. It’s mostly namebrand stuff at a discount. "We target upper to middle class consumers," said Ruth Barnabe, part owner of Chic Consign.

At Plato's Closet, they're in the business of selling second hand clothes. "I spent $136. We got 3 jeans, 10 shirts, a few sweatshirts and a belt," said one shopper.

So how do these places work? Some stores will buy your extra clothes from you on the spot, for what they think is a fair price. Consignment stores will sell your item and give you 50 percent of that sale. The catch: you can't collect the dough until the item is sold.
