The parents of a 29-year-old Fort Carson soldier say he was adamant about joining the military since childhood. Staff Sergeant William T. Latham died Wednesday at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D-C. He was taken off life support nearly a month after suffering shrapnel injuries in Iraq May 19th.

Latham was a native of Kingman, Arizona. His mother, Brenda, told a newspaper that her son insisted on joining the military since age 12. Two of his uncles are Vietnam veterans, and both grandfathers served in World War Two.

Latham ordered his troops to fire a 40 millimeter grenade at the door of a suspected arms market. A piece of shrapnel flew under his helmet and lodged in his head. No one else was injured.
