Authorities who spent five days searching for a Marine reported missing in Boulder County, have arrested the man's friend for investigation on a charge of false reporting.
Sheriff's officials say they believe the disappearance was staged.
Sheriff's Commander Phil West says 20-year-old Steve Powers of Boulder was arrested late Wednesday.
Powers had told authorities 21-year-old Lance Hering was injured while the two were hiking late last month and that Hering disappeared before Powers could return with help.
West says sheriff's officials plan to seek restitution for the thousands of dollars spent on the search, and Hering could be charged with false reporting.
Hering had been in Iraq, but returned in July and is due back at Camp Pendleton, California, this month.
