In defending the use of C-I-A prisons, President Bush is pointing to successful interrogations that he says saved American lives.
In a White House speech, Bush explained how within months of 9/11, Abu Zubaydah was caught. Zubaydah is thought to have been a close associate of Osama bin Laden, and ran a camp that trained some of the hijackers.
Bush says Zubaydah thought he gave interrogators nominal information, but it turned out to be important -- like details on another plot to attack the U-S. He says Zubaydah also gave up the name of the Nine-Eleven mastermind, who was later caught.
Like a series of dominos, Bush explained how once they started questioning the mastermind, he told them about another man, who then told them about someone else -- leading to still more arrests and more information.
