None of his supporters showed up today to see the leader of a polygamist sect make his first court appearance in Utah. Looking pale and gaunt, Warren Jeffs appeared by way of closed-circuit T-V. He said little -- only that the lawyer who represented him after his arrest in Nevada is looking for a Utah lawyer to plead his case.
Jeffs is accused of arranging a marriage between an underage girl and an older man. He's charged with two first-degree felony counts of rape as an accomplice. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. The judge says the question of bail will be taken up at a hearing in about two weeks.
