A spokesman says Rumsfeld had successful surgery today at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington to repair a torn rotator cuff. He says Rumsfeld didn't undergo general anesthesia. But he did transfer one responsibility to Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England. That's the responsibility for deciding how to respond if a potentially hostile aircraft enters U-S airspace. The spokesman says it's expected to be transferred back to Rumsfeld after a short time.
According to the spokesman, the surgery had been scheduled weeks ahead of time. He says Rumsfeld is resting at the hospital after the operation, and that he's "fine."
