Colorado lawmakers are asking the Pentagon to allow a Longmont soldier to return from Iraq so she can be with her dying mother. The Army has turned down Elycia Fine's request for a compassionate reassignment. Her mother has terminal breast cancer.

Colorado Senators Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Wayne Allard and Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave are intervening for her. Fine has been in Iraq since January with the Third Infantry's 103rd Military Intelligenc e Battalion.

The battalion isn't expected to return to Fort Stewart in Georgia until at least September. Doctors estimate Fine's mother has six months to a year to live.
