Lush green growth triggered by Colorado's spring storms is drying up -- just in time for a Fourth of July holiday that experts fear will be at risk for wildfires.

Justin Dombrowski of the Boulder Fire Department says the combination of fireworks, vegetation drying out quickly and people forgetting the potential problem could result in difficulties.

The wet spring helped grasses and shrubs grow tall and dense. But with hot weather now those plants are quickly becoming fuel. Weekend forecasts call for high temperatures and dry thunderstorms that could bring wind and lightning.

The Forest Service says the eastern part of Colorado still is at
low risk -- but the mountains and western parts of the state are at
high or even extreme risk.
