Academy Training Gliders Staying on Ground

The Air Force Academy's training gliders will be on the ground indefinitely after a safety review found ``mistakes in judgment'' in the program.

The suspension comes one week after the commander of the glider
training squadron was reassigned over questions about his
leadership.

Academy spokesman John Van Winkle says there's no word on when
the glider program will resume. He wouldn't give specifics on the
problems but said steps are under way to correct them.

Academy commanders have questioned whether the gliders are safe
to fly at the academy's 71-hundred-foot elevation and whether they
were adequately tested before they were purchased.

No one has died or been hurt in the gliders but one cadet had to
parachute out in October.
