Last month, the Colorado Springs City Council gave a tentative approval for the purchase of Red Rock Canyon, at 12 and a half million dollars.

Right now, 800 acres of land between Garden of the Gods and Manitou Springs in privately owned.

The city plans to use Trails and Open Space, or TOPS funds to buy the land. It'll then be open to anyone.

But the sale won't be final until a few amendments are made to the agreement, and that could take a few months.

That means hiking, biking, or even setting foot in Red Rock Canyon right now is illegal.

Signs are posted, but not everyone is paying attention to them.

Now, a private security company has been hired to patrol the area.

If trespassers are caught, they will be fined.
