SALIDA, Colo. (AP) -- Wildlife district manager Ron Dobson began investigating after a bear unearthed the moose's skull. He says it was obvious that whoever killed the animal when through a great deal of trouble to conceal it by burying it.

The investigation was also helped by a tipster who pointed officials to Charles Pedraza of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

A search of Pedraza's storage unit turned up a moose pelt and photos that placed him at the scene. A D-N-A test confirmed the pelt belonged to the dug-up moose skull.

Pedraza has pleaded guilty to poaching. A Chaffee County judge has ordered Pedraza to pay an $11,391 fine.
