The new test looks for antibodies to the virus in a patient's
blood. It will help health officials sort real SARS cases from
other respiratory illnesses.
But it won't help the physicians struggling to make the initial
diagnosis because results from the antibody test aren't ready for
three weeks.
Doctors say six of Colorado's eleven suspected SARS cases have
tested negative for the virus. Health officials are still waiting
for results on several other patients.
The SARS virus has killed at least 755 people worldwide out of
more than 83-hundred people infected. The vast majority of them are
in Asia. China has been the hardest hit, with 328 deaths.
