The Springs City Council has voted to purchase Red Rock Canyon. The 800 acre canyon is located between Garden of the Gods and Manitou Springs.
In April, voters approved extending the Trails and Open Space Parks, or TOPS, sales tax until 2005. That's where the money will come from to make the $12.5 million purchase.
The sale won't be final until a few amendments are made. Once those are complete the issue will once again go before City Council for final approval.
If the deal makes it through, it would be the single most costly purchase the city has ever made.
