Any victim will tell you the details of being robbed play over and over in your head, like a re-occurring nightmare. “He pulled a revolver from his jacket, swung it at my face..." "When I do hear sounds, I wonder, should I have a gun?"
A robbery is unlawfully taking property from someone else using violence or intimidation. Across the city and county, robberies are on the rise, up 55% from last year. Colorado Springs Police Sgt. Jeff Jensen said, "They're more prolific, we’re lucky. There have been no injuries in bank robberies, but personal robberies on rise, and that's concerning us."
So why the sudden increase? Is it because criminals are becoming bolder? Are drugs the driving factor? Sgt. Jensen said his unit doesn't know why there's a rash of robberies. They just want to catch the bad guys and make sure the public stays safe. "If you take crime prevention tips, keep the light on outside house. Don't answer your door to someone you don't know. These are good tips to have to prevent crime from happening."
In 2005, there were 440 robberies in the Springs. Right now, just half way through the year, we're already at 346 robberies and police believe we'll easily pass last year's total.
