DENVER (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard, who is retiring in January after two terms, is interested in becoming chancellor at Colorado State University.

Allard spokesman Steve Wymer confirmed the news Tuesday, saying the Republican has had an informal discussion with CSU Board of Governors Chairman Doug Jones about the Denver-based position.

The opening comes after this month's sudden resignation of CSU President and Chancellor Larry Penley.

Penley quit with 1 1/2 years left on his contract, saying only that he is pursuing other opportunities in higher education. His separation agreement bars both sides from elaborating.

Penley's resignation is effective Nov. 30.

Allard was born in Fort Collins and raised on a ranch near Walden. He graduated from CSU with a degree in veterinary medicine.
