Your kids probably do it everyday, text and walk simultaneously, but what they may not know is they could be putting themselves in danger.

Texting has been around for more than ten years. Some say they've mastered the skill and some really are masters at it, but when it comes to doing it while your walking or driving, doctors say the short answer is that it can't be mastered.

Doctor Andrew Berson with Memorial Health System in Colorado Springs says when you're texting your ability to hear and see what's coming slips away.

"You lose a significant amount of your peripheral vision. You don't register things coming in from the side," said Dr. Berson.

Dr. Berson says the part of your brain used to register your peripheral vision is the same part that allows your brain to send a text message. "I think that people are unaware that it's a significant issue," said Dr. Berson.

You might say texting is a form of communication, and now it's an art.

"I'm a professional texter," said Seth Rush, a Colorado Springs resident.

Especially if you can dial in while doing other things like skateboarding or riding your bike. "I can't imagine that you'd be able to text and ride a bike unless you're riding with no hands which would obviously be wrong on so many levels," said Dr. Berson.

Dr. Berson says so far they haven't had any documented cases of injuries from texting and walking. "We do see some strange things from time to time," said Dr. Berson.

But Dr. Berson says it's real. People really are hurting themselves when they're not paying attention. "Yes. I text and walk all the time," said Andree Meignein, a Colorado Springs Resident.

A 14-year-old Florida boy was killed a couple of months ago. He was hit by a car from texting and not paying attention.

"You get tunnel vision," said Dr. Berson.

Some compare walking and texting to walking with your eyes closed. "If you're not paying attention you can slip or you can run into things," said Dr. Berson.

"I've fallen down the stairs a couple of times. You have to avoid teachers and students and doors. So, yes it takes a lot of skill," said Alaina Anders, a Colorado Springs High School student.

So we put some of those skills to the test by creating an obstacle course in the middle of a downtown street. Our first contestant was Anders. She passed with flying colors along with Rush. "I'm a master at it now," said Rush. Meignein also went through the obstacle course with out any problems. "It was a pretty easy course," said Meignein.

But Rebecca McDowell on the other hand. "That was tough, it was hard," said McDowell. She even fell off course by stepping off the curb. "I was probably more focused on texting than I was on walking," said McDowell.

In Brick Lane, London they have a street that is padded for clumsy texsters.
"Maybe I should move to London, " said McDowell.

So the next time you decide to multi-task think about what could happen, which senses you're losing, like your hearing and know that it could have been avoided. "It's not that you're not hearing it's that your brain is not processing" said Dr. Berson.

The statistics on car accidents from texting and driving are staggering. More than 80% of all car crashes can be attributed to distracted driving.
