The reward for information leading to the vandals who defaced the monuments to victims of the 1914 Ludlow Massacre has grown to $5,000. The United Mine Workers of America is offering most of the money, while the city of Trinidad and Las Animas County have offered $1,000.
Earlier this week, the heads were knocked off two granite figures that symbolize five miners, two women and eleven children who died at a coal camp about 12 miles north of Trinidad.
The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. is sending a representative to gauge the extent of the damage and investigate
possible restoration of the statue.
Trinidad police and the Las Animas County sheriff are investigating.
