From the diagnosis, through treatment, and into recovery--one nurse in Pueblo is there to make sure all breast cancer patients have someone to lean on.
Thanks to a grant from the Susan G. Komen foundation, Parkview Medical Center is able to provide a nurse navigator to help breast cancer patients through their treatment.
"They want someone who's genuine and who's really concerned for them, and I am," says Melinda McAndrews, 35, Nurse Navigator.
McAndrews feels this position is perfect for her after spending 13 years as an oncology nurse.
"I can continue to reinforce the education that they receive and the emotional support, too."
A grant from the Susan G. Komen foundation allows McAndrews to serve women battling cancer--free of charge.
"I do most of my business with them over the phone, and I see them initially when they come in a give them the survival basket."
A survival basket hat she prepares herself, which includes a hand-made bracelet.
"She just made me feel very special," says Linda Roberts, cancer patient.
McAndrews says she is there to make sure that during this life-altering experience, patients feel they're not alone.
"I am always available, even if I'm not here I've got voice mail that I check religiously," says McAndrews.
"She brought so much encouragement, she brought joy. It was wonderful to have her there," says Roberts.
28 women are currently enrolled in her program, and she says she's looking to expand.

I walk in the 3-Day 60 mile Breast Cancer walk in Phoenix each year in support of the Susan G. Koman Foundation. I am so thankful for this nurse and that the Foundation supports her. This is just another reason why I walk.
